The Jurchen Jin dynasty also used it as their eastern capital, naming it Dongjing. In 1621, the leader Nurhaci captured the city and made it the capital of the Later Jin empire. He named it Dongjing again and moved several family tombs to Dongjingling, just east of the city. However, the capital was moved to Shenyang in 1625, and the city's political importance faded.
Many significant historical events and battles occurred in this region. In 645 AD, a major battle took place between the Tang and Goguryeo forces. During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, Russian troops camped in the city and burned the ancient Guangyou temple. Later, from August 24 to September 1, 1904, the Battle of Liaoyang occurred. This was a major conflict during the Russo-Japanese War. In more recent history, the city saw widespread labor protests in March 2002. These protests were sparked by the bankruptcy and liquidation of the Liaoyang Ferroalloy Factory, also known as Liaotie. Workers from seven different plants protested against corruption and unpaid wages. This event led to investigations and several prison sentences for factory managers and officials.
Today, the city is a center for culture, education, and tourism. It is home to the College of Foreign Studies at Liaoning University and several vocational colleges. The city also hosts professional basketball and volleyball games in a modern sports facility. For visitors, Baita Park is a major destination located in the Baita district. It contains the White Pagoda, or baita, which dates back to 1189 from the Liao Dynasty. Next to the park is the Guangyou Temple, one of the largest temple complexes in northeast China. The temple features a giant Buddha statue carved from sandalwood. The Liaoyang Museum, opened in 2009, also displays many important antiques.
Liaoyang offers various recreational activities for residents and travelers. People can enjoy rafting on the Taizi River or visit the Shenwo Reservoir Scenic Area. This demographic data helps describe the social structure of the modern city. The city remains a vital part of the Shenyang Military Region, serving as the headquarters for the 39th Mechanized Group Army.
