Today, the region is a busy place for work and study. Kraków is a major center for many industries. These include high technology, banking, and making food. The largest company is a steelworks in Nowa Huta. Many students live here too. About 130,000 students attend schools in Kraków alone. The Jagiellonian University is the biggest of these. Many famous people, like Pope John Paul II, studied here. It is a place where history and modern life meet.

It covers a significant area and holds a population of 3,404,863 people as of 2019. The region is named after the historic Małopolska area. However, the modern province covers only a small part of that ancient territory. The ancient region once stretched much further north toward cities like Radom and Siedlce. Today, the voivodeship serves as a vital administrative and cultural center for the country. Its capital and largest city is Kraków.

Geography defines the borders and character of this province. To the north, the Świętokrzyskie Mountains mark the boundary. The west features the Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska, which is a wide range of hills. In the south, the landscape rises into the Tatra, Pieniny, and Beskidy Mountains.

Politically, the province shares borders with several other Polish regions. It borders Silesian Voivodeship to the west and Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship to the north. To the east lies the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. The southern border is an international one with Slovakia. Almost all of the land sits within the Vistula River catchment area.

The climate of Lesser Poland is unique within the nation. It is considered the warmest province in Poland. During the summer, average daytime temperatures stay between 20°C and 25°C. In July and August, temperatures often reach 30°C. The city of Tarnów is the warmest place in the country throughout the entire year.

Winter weather patterns change frequently due to various wind patterns. Some winters are mildly cold, while others are humid and warm. Some are continental and very cold. Interestingly, the province contains the Błędów Desert. This is the only desert located in Poland.

Lesser Poland has a deep and complex history. In the Early Middle Ages, the Vistulans tribe lived on this land. The region has been part of Poland since the 10th century. Kraków became the capital of Poland in 1038 under Casimir I the Restorer.

The region also faced great hardship during the late 18th-century Partitions of Poland. It saw several uprisings, such as the Kościuszko Uprising in 1794. During World War II, Germany occupied the territory. They committed genocidal acts against Poles and Jews. This included operating the Auschwitz concentration camp in Oświęcim.

The modern voivodeship was officially created on January 1, 1999.

The economy of the province is very strong and diverse. In 2018, its gross domestic product (GDP) was €40.4 billion. This amount represents 8.1% of the total Polish economic output. The region is known for high incomes and low unemployment. Many different industries operate here, including high technology and banking. Other sectors include chemical, metallurgical, and food processing industries. Kraków is the most industrialized city in the province. The Tadeusz Sendzimir Steelworks in Nowa Huta is the largest regional enterprise. It employs 17,500 people.

Education is a major pillar of the region's identity. Kraków is a massive center for higher learning. There are fifteen different institutions of higher learning in the city. About 130,000 students attend these universities. The Jagiellonian University is the largest, with 44,200 students.

It was founded in 1364 as the Kraków Academy. Famous graduates include Nicolaus Copernicus and Pope John Paul II. The AGH University of Science and Technology is also highly regarded. It is considered the best technical university in Poland. Other major centers include Nowy Sącz and Tarnów.

Tourism brings many visitors to the province's historic sites. Lesser Poland has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the Kraków Old Town and the Wawel Royal Castle.
