The lion was so tough that weapons could not hurt it. Heracles had to use his bare hands to win. Zeus later put the lion in the sky to remember it.

This is a gravitational lens where gravity bends light. There is also a very old star called Caffau's star. It is 13 billion years old and lives in the galactic halo. This makes it one of the oldest stars we know.

Watching Leo can bring even more surprises to your night. In November, you can see the Leonid meteor shower.

It is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by astronomers today. In the zodiac, Leo sits between the constellation Cancer to the west and Virgo to the east. Its name is the Latin word for lion. This constellation is highly recognizable because of its many bright stars. The stars form a distinctive shape that resembles a crouching lion.

This shape makes it easy for observers to find in the night sky.

To understand how to find Leo, you can look for a specific pattern of stars. Six of the nine brightest stars form an asterism known as "The Sickle." To many modern observers, this pattern looks like a backwards question mark. The stars in the Sickle include Epsilon Leonis, Mu Leonis, Zeta Leonis, Gamma Leonis, Eta Leonis, and Alpha Leonis. The remaining three stars form an isosceles triangle. Beta Leonis, also known as Denebola, marks the lion's tail. The rest of the body is delineated by Delta Leonis and Theta Leonis.

Many individual stars within Leo have unique characteristics and distances. Alpha Leonis, or Regulus, is a blue-white main-sequence star. It has a magnitude of 1.34 and is 77.5 light-years from Earth. Its name means "the little king." At the opposite end, Beta Leonis marks the tail. It is a blue-white star with a magnitude of 2.23 located 36 light-years away. Gamma Leonis, called Algieba, is a complex binary star system. It is 126 light-years away and includes a third optical component. The primary star is a gold-yellow giant with a magnitude of 2.61. Other notable stars include the red star Rasalas and the white star Chertan.

Humans have studied Leo for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that Mesopotamians recognized a similar constellation as early as 4000 BCE. In Babylonian astronomy, it was called UR.GU.LA, meaning "Great Lion." The Greeks associated the constellation with the Nemean Lion. This mythical beast was the subject of the first of Heracles' twelve labors.

The lion was impervious to weapons like swords and spears. Heracles eventually defeated the creature using his bare hands. Zeus placed the lion in the sky to commemorate this event. In 1602, the astronomer Tycho Brahe moved a group of stars from Leo to form the constellation Coma Berenices.

Leo is also home to diverse and extreme stellar objects. The red giant R Leonis is a Mira variable star. It is located 330 light-years away and has a diameter of 450 solar diameters. It periodically brightens to a magnitude of 4.4. One of the nearest stars to Earth, Wolf 359, is also in Leo. It is a red dwarf located only 7.8 light-years away. Another remarkable object is Caffau's star, or SDSS J102915+172927. This population II star is about 13 billion years old. It has the lowest metallicity of any known star, making it one of the oldest in the Galaxy.

Beyond individual stars, Leo contains vast deep-sky objects. The constellation features the Leo Triplet, which includes Messier 65, Messier 66, and NGC 3628.

Messier 66 is a spiral galaxy located 37 million light-years away. It has a distorted shape because of gravitational interactions with its neighbors. Other famous sights include the spiral galaxy NGC 2903, discovered by William Herschel in 1784. This galaxy is 25 million light-years away and contains many star-forming hotspots. Leo even contains some of the largest structures in the observable universe. These include large quasar groups like the Huge-LQG.

Observers can also experience celestial events related to Leo. The Leonid meteor shower occurs every November.

This shower peaks around November 14 or 15. The meteors come from the parent body Comet Tempel-Tuttle. This comet causes significant outbursts every 35 years. During a normal peak, people may see about 10 meteors per hour. A smaller meteor shower, the January Leonids, also occurs early in the year. These phenomena connect the movement of comets to the stars we see in the Leo constellation.
