\n\nThe island has a very interesting shape. In the center, there is a deep basin. This basin is the inside of the volcano crater. A thin stretch of rock once closed this crater. That rock collapsed in 1780. Now, a small channel lets the sea inside. The entrance is only a few meters deep. Because it is so shallow, only small boats can enter. The walls around the inside are very high. Some of these walls reach up to 300 meters. There are also hot springs on the island.

\n\nPeople have seen this island for a long time. Portuguese sailors first found it in 1559. They even made paintings of the place. Later, Dutch explorers visited in 1618. In the 1800s, many people came to hunt seals. One man named George William Robinson lived there for 23 months. In 1843, France claimed the island. A man named Martin Dupeyrat landed there to raise the French flag.

Even famous people visited. Charles Lightoller was shipwrecked here in 1889. He later became famous for surviving the Titanic.\n\nToday, the island is a home for many animals. It is a very important place for seabirds to breed. You can find many penguins and seals there. There are about 9,000 pairs of northern rockhopper penguins. You might also see albatrosses or shearwaters. In the past, rats and goats lived on the island. These animals were hard on the local birds. People worked to remove the rats in 1997. This helped the birds live safely again.

The island is an important breeding site for many seabirds. There is no permanent human population living there today. Instead, a scientific research cabin supports short ecological campaigns. The island is managed by a senior administrator located on Réunion. It is an interesting place because it is the antipodal point of Cheyenne County, Colorado. This means it is one of the few places in the continental United States with a non-oceanic antipode.\n\nThe island is a volcanic structure with a triangular shape.

It is the summit of an active volcano. This volcano last erupted in 1793 from its southwest flank. The landscape is mostly rocky with steep cliffs on the east side. The island sits on the Amsterdam-Saint Paul Plateau. This plateau was formed by a volcanic hotspot. Scientists believe the active hotspot is located near the island. The island is no more than 400,000 years old. It was formed by magma from the upper mantle. This magma mixed with the Amsterdam-Saint Paul hotspot plume. The basalt rocks here are unique. They are aphyric, which means they have no phenocrysts. These rocks are also mildly alkalic and highly fractionated.\n\nThe geography of the island includes a massive interior basin. This basin is the wide and deep crater of the volcano. The crater is surrounded by steep walls. Some of these walls reach heights of up to 300 meters.

In 1780, a thin stretch of rock that closed the crater collapsed. This collapse created a channel that admits the sea. The entrance to the crater is only a few meters deep. Because of this shallow depth, only very small ships or boats can enter. The interior of the island also contains active thermal springs.\n\nHumans have encountered Île Saint-Paul for centuries. Portuguese sailors first discovered the island in 1559. The crew of the ship São Paulo mapped and described it. Members like Father Manuel Álvares and chemist Henrique Dias were on board. They correctly calculated the latitude as 38° South. Later, the Dutchman Harwick Claesz de Hillegom saw it in 1618. In 1696, Willem de Vlamingh made one of the first detailed descriptions.

During the 1800s, the island became a place for sealers. An American sealer named George William Robinson lived there for 23 months. France officially claimed the island in 1843. Captain Mieroslawski led this effort. He wanted to start a fishery on the island. He successfully pressed the Governor of Réunion to take possession.\n\nThe history of the island includes many shipwrecks and visits. In 1865, the Confederate warship CSS Shenandoah stopped there. The sailors had trouble with thick kelp in the harbor.

In 1871, the British troop transport HMS Megaera was wrecked. About 400 people were on board and stayed for three months. In 1889, Charles Lightoller was shipwrecked on the island. He was later famous for surviving the sinking of the RMS Titanic. He believed pirates might have hidden treasure in the island's caves. In 1874, a French mission used the island to observe the transit of Venus. This mission included a significant geological survey by Charles Vélain.\n\nA difficult period occurred in the 1930s. A company tried to start a spiny lobster cannery in 1928. Most workers left in 1930, but seven people stayed to guard the site. The relief ship arrived much too late. Five people died due to lack of food and scurvy. These people included a child named Paule Brunou. This tragic event is known as \"Les Oubliés de Saint-Paul,\" or the forgotten ones.
