The SpaceX launch sequence uses a hold-down feature to check all systems. The launcher is only released once all propulsion systems are confirmed to be working normally. If an abnormal condition is detected, the system can perform an automatic safe shut-down. For rockets using liquid hydrogen, hydrogen burn-off systems help prevent dangerous gas buildup. This prevents an overpressure blast wave from damaging the vehicle.

Site selection is a critical part of constructing a launch pad. Engineers often choose coastal locations, especially with the ocean to the east. This allows them to use the Earth's rotation to increase the specific impulse of the launch. It also ensures that the trajectory path stays away from populated areas. Some programs, like the Soviet or French programs, use facilities far from their main territory. For example, the Baikonur Cosmodrome or Guiana Space Centre provide these strategic advantages. These locations help ensure both the efficiency of the flight and the safety of people on the ground.
