People often call it the last ice age. It was part of a much longer cycle of cooling. This cycle is part of the Quaternary glaciation. That large cycle began about 2,588,000 years ago. The Last Glacial Period happened during the Late Pleistocene epoch. It ended when the Holocene began. The Holocene is the geological time we live in now.

This period worked through cycles of cold and warmth. Scientists call the cold phases glacials. These are separated by warmer times called interglacials. During the Last Glacial Period, glaciers would move forward and then retreat. The coldest part was the Last Glacial Maximum. This happened between 26,000 and 20,000 years ago.

The Earth's orbit also changed during this time. These changes are known as Milankovitch cycles. They helped pace the timing of these ice cycles. One final cold snap called the Younger Dryas happened near the end. It lasted from about 12,800 to 11,700 years ago.

Different parts of the world had different names for these ice events. In the British Isles, people call it the Devensian. This name comes from the Latin word for people living by the Dee River.

This larger cycle of ice began roughly 2,588,000 years ago and is still ongoing today. Scientists study this period to understand how the planet's climate shifts over long periods of time.

Climate during this era was defined by cyclical changes in temperature. These cycles are driven by Milankovitch cycles, which are periodic variations in the Earth's orbit. These orbital changes pace the transition between different climate phases. A glacial is a cold phase where glaciers advance across the land. These are separated by warmer periods called interglacials. During the LGP, the Earth experienced alternating episodes of glacier advance and retreat. The coldest point was the Last Glacial Maximum, occurring between 26,000 and 20,000 years ago.

In North America, the Laurentide Ice Sheet blanketed Canada and the northern United States. However, Alaska remained mostly ice-free due to an arid climate. In northern Eurasia, the Scandinavian ice sheet covered parts of Britain, Germany, Poland, and Russia. This ice reached as far east as the Taymyr Peninsula in Siberia. In the Southern Hemisphere, the Patagonian Ice Sheet covered parts of the Andes. Antarctica was entirely glaciated, with ice covering all land and extending onto the continental shelf.

A notable cooling event called the Younger Dryas occurred between 12,800 and 11,700 years ago. This event marked the very end of the LGP and the Pleistocene epoch. As the ice sheets began to retreat, they caused massive changes in the ocean. Around 12,000 years ago, explosive eruptions of methane occurred in the Barents Sea. These eruptions were caused by the destabilization of methane hydrates as the ice retreated. This process created large craters in the ocean sediment that are still visible today.

The LGP had a massive impact on the physical structure of the Earth. One of the most significant effects was the reduction of global sea levels. Because so much water was trapped in massive ice sheets, the oceans were much shallower.
