His early life began in the kingdom of Ayodhya. He was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Sumitra.

Lakshmana had a twin brother named Shatrughna. His birth was part of a larger event involving the king's three wives. Dasharatha performed a ritual called a Putrakameshti yajna to have children. This ritual resulted in the birth of four sons. Rama and Bharata were born to Kausalya and Kaikeyi. Lakshmana and Shatrughna were born to Sumitra. This established a complex web of royal family connections.

Lakshmana's development involved intense training and marriage. The sage Vishvamitra took Rama and Lakshmana into the forest. The sage taught them how to use Devastras. These are known as celestial weaponry. He also provided training in advanced religion. This preparation allowed them to defeat powerful demons like Tataka, Maricha, and Subahu. Later, Lakshmana married Urmila. This happened after Rama won the swayamvara of Sita.

The marriage ceremony was guided by Shatananda. This union helped strengthen the alliance between two kingdoms. Lakshmana and Urmila eventually had two sons named Angada and Chandraketu.

During the fourteen-year exile, Lakshmana demonstrated extreme devotion. He accompanied Rama and Sita into the forest to serve them. In a place called Panchavati, he built a hut for them. One notable event involved the deity Nidra. On the first night of exile, Lakshmana asked Nidra for a boon. He requested to remain awake for the entire fourteen years. Nidra agreed, but someone else had to sleep in his place. Lakshmana asked his wife, Urmila, to take this role. Urmila accepted the task and slept for fourteen years. This sacrifice is known as Urmila Nidra.

Lakshmana also played a major role in the war against Ravana. He is famous for drawing a perimeter line called the Lakshmana Rekha. This line was meant to protect Sita. However, Sita crossed the line to give alms to a disguised Brahmin. This led to her abduction. During the subsequent war, Lakshmana faced many dangerous foes. He was once struck by magic arrows from Indrajita.

His life ended through a final act of duty. The sage Durvasa once demanded an audience with Rama. Rama was in a private meeting with the deity Yama. Yama had ordered that the meeting remain confidential. Anyone who interrupted would lose their life. Lakshmana was guarding the door and refused the sage. This anger threatened to curse all of Ayodhya. Lakshmana chose to interrupt the meeting to save the city. As a result, Durvasa cursed him to go to heaven alive. Lakshmana later went to the Sarayu river to end his life. Indra then took him to heaven alive.

Today, Lakshmana's influence is seen in many cultures and fields. He is worshipped in various parts of India.
