For a long time, scientists thought they were close relatives of dinosaurs. These animals belong to a group called avemetatarsalians. This group includes the early ancestors of both birds and dinosaurs. However, new fossil finds in 2020 changed what we know. These fossils suggest lagerpetids might be closer to pterosaurs instead. Pterosaurs were the famous reptiles that could fly.

Their thigh bones, or femurs, were slender and shaped like an S. The top of the femur had a unique hook shape. Near the knee, they had a special bump called a crista tibiofibularis. This bump was larger in lagerpetids than in many other animals. Their shin bones, called the tibia and fibula, were long and thin. Even the tibia was often longer than the thigh bone. This helped them move in a very specific way.

The ankle was made of two main bones. These are called the astragalus and the calcaneum. In lagerpetids, these two bones were co-ossified. This means they were fused together into one piece. This trait is also seen in pterosaurs and some early dinosaurs. The astragalus also had two small, pyramid-shaped structures sticking up. One of these structures is unique to the lagerpetid family.

Scientists have found lagerpetid fossils in many different parts of the world.

They lived in Argentina, Brazil, and India. Fossils have also been found in Madagascar and several places in the United States. These include Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Some fossils were found in Scotland, too. One small animal called Scleromochlus might even be a close relative. The largest lagerpetid, Dromomeron gigas, lived in Argentina. Its thigh bone was about 6.5 centimeters long.

The first lagerpetid found was named Lagerpeton. Alfred Sherwood Romer described this species in 1971. He noticed its legs looked a bit like small theropod dinosaurs. Later, in 1986, Arcucci named the group Lagerpetonidae. It was renamed Lagerpetidae in 2009 after new studies. Today, scientists continue to study these fossils to map the tree of life. They want to know exactly how reptiles turned into birds and pterosaurs.

For many years, scientists classified lagerpetids as dinosauromorphs. This meant they believed these animals were closer to dinosaurs than to pterosaurs. Because these bones are sturdy, they are more likely to be preserved in the fossil record. The hip structure of some species, like Ixalerpeton, shows very specific adaptations. The ilium, which is the upper blade of the hip, has a thick ridge called a supraacetabular crest. In lagerpetids, this ridge is thickest above the middle of the hip socket, or acetabulum. This crest also extends forward along the pubic peduncle. The hip was generally wide and featured a closed acetabulum with a bony inner wall. They also possessed two sacral vertebrae.

The leg bones of lagerpetids show unique shapes and structures. Their femur, or thigh bone, was slender and shaped like an S. The head of the femur was notably hook-shaped when viewed from the side. Unlike many other archosaurs, lagerpetids lack a specific bump called the anterolateral tuber. Instead, they have an emargination, or a notched area, just below where that bump would be. Near the knee, they possess a unique, enlarged bump called the crista tibiofibularis.

The ankle of a lagerpetid was composed of two primary bones. These are the astragalus, which connects to the tibia and fibula, and the calcaneum, which connects only to the fibula. In lagerpetids, these two bones were co-ossified, meaning they were fused together. This fusion is a trait also seen in pterosaurs and some early dinosaurs. The astragalus also featured two small, pyramid-shaped structures. One of these is a posterior ascending process, which is a structure entirely unique to the lagerpetid family. Additionally, the calcaneum had a concave facet for the fibula and lacked a large rearward bump.

This means they form a series of steps leading toward the pterosaurs. This research helps close a "ghost lineage," which is a gap in the fossil record. By finding these connections, scientists better understand how the ancestors of birds, dinosaurs, and pterosaurs were related in the Triassic world.
