Scientific study of the island has led to important discoveries. In 1815, the German geologist Leopold von Buch visited the islands. He visited the Las Cañadas caldera on Tenerife. He also visited the Taburiente caldera on La Palma. His visits helped introduce the word "caldera" into geological vocabulary. In Spanish, "caldera" refers to a large cooking pot. This term describes the large volcanic depressions found on the islands. 
The climate on La Palma varies by location and altitude. The northern coast and high altitudes have a Mediterranean climate. This means they have dry summers and humid winters. 
Human life on the island is organized into 14 municipalities. At the start of 2023, the total population was 84,338.
