Kyoto has a very long and interesting history. It became the capital of Japan in the year 794. At that time, it was named Heian-kyō. Emperor Kanmu chose this site for the imperial court. The city was designed using a grid pattern. This pattern was based on ancient Chinese cities. For many centuries, the emperors ruled from this place. The city remained the capital until 1869.

Many big events happened in Kyoto over the years. During the Sengoku period, the city saw much fighting. The Ōnin War caused a lot of damage between 1467 and 1477. Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi helped rebuild the city. He made new streets and built large walls. In 1864, a rebellion caused many houses to burn down. However, the city was largely spared during World War II. This helped save many old buildings from being destroyed.

Today, Kyoto is a major center for culture and learning. It is known as the cultural capital of Japan. The city has about 2,000 temples and shrines. Some of these are famous World Heritage Sites. The city serves as the capital of Kyoto Prefecture. It is a central part of the Greater Kyoto metropolitan statistical area. This large area is home to about 3.8 million people. Kyoto itself has a population of approximately 1.46 million residents. This makes it the ninth-most populous city in Japan. The city is also a key part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area. This region includes the nearby cities of Osaka and Kobe.

Geographically, Kyoto is situated within the Yamashiro Basin. This basin is part of the larger Tamba highlands. The city is nestled in a valley and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. These mountains are named Higashiyama, Kitayama, and Nishiyama.

Because it is located in an interior valley, the climate is humid subtropical. This means the city experiences significant seasonal changes. Summers are typically hot and humid. Winters can be quite cold and sometimes see snowfall. The rainy season usually occurs from mid-June through July. Additionally, the region is prone to typhoons during the summer and autumn months. Three rivers flow through the basin: the Uji, the Katsura, and the Kamo rivers.

Kyoto has a deep history as a center of power. In 794, Emperor Kanmu chose this location for the imperial court. He wanted to move the capital away from the powerful Buddhist clergy in Nara. The original city was named Heian-kyō, which means "Heian capital."

The city was designed using a grid pattern based on Chinese feng shui. This design was modeled after the ancient Chinese capitals of Chang'an and Luoyang. The emperors ruled from Kyoto for eleven centuries. They remained in the city until 1869. During this time, it was often called the "thousand-year capital." After the imperial court moved to Tokyo, the city was briefly known as Saikyō, or "western capital."

The city has faced many periods of conflict and reconstruction. During the Sengoku period, the Ōnin War caused extensive destruction between 1467 and 1477. Samurai factions fought in the streets, and many buildings burned down. Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi helped rebuild the city in the late 16th century. He created new rectangular blocks and built earthwork walls called encircling walls. In 1864, the Hamaguri rebellion caused the destruction of 28,000 houses. Despite these challenges, Kyoto was largely spared from large-scale destruction during World War II. Because of this, many prewar cultural treasures remain intact. This includes traditional townhouses known as machiya.

Today, Kyoto is recognized as the cultural capital of Japan. It is a major destination for tourists from around the world. The city contains roughly 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Some of these sites are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Notable landmarks include the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kinkaku-ji, and Kiyomizu-dera. The Agency for Cultural Affairs is also headquartered here. Beyond history, Kyoto is a modern hub for industry and education. The famous video game company Nintendo is based in the city.

Modern development has changed the face of the city. In the late 19th century, the city worked to modernize its industrial base. A major project was the Lake Biwa Canal, completed in 1890. This 20 km waterway provided drinking water and irrigation. It also provided hydroelectric power for factories and street lighting. This power helped launch Japan's first commercial electric railway in 1895. While many areas still use the ancient grid pattern, new architecture is appearing. The Kyoto Station complex is a prominent example of modern design.

Kyoto connects the ancient past with the globalized present. It hosts important international events, such as the 1997 conference on greenhouse gas emissions. The city also manages a delicate balance between preservation and growth. Urbanization is currently affecting the local environment. For example, the amount of rain reaching the natural water table is decreasing. This has caused some local wells to dry up at an increasing rate. Despite these modern pressures, Kyoto remains a vital symbol of Japanese heritage. It continues to influence global culture through its history, its art, and its technology.
