He enrolled at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Because money was tight, he worked many menial jobs to survive. He worked as a dishwasher, a cleaner, and a wholesaler of fish and poultry. Despite these challenges, he was a very successful student. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics and sociology in 1939. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Theology from Lincoln in 1942. He also studied at the University of Pennsylvania, earning two Master's degrees.

While in America, Nkrumah became a very active student leader. He helped organize the African Students Association of America and Canada. He also played a major role in a Pan-African conference in New York in 1944. This conference urged the United States to help make Africa free and developed. Nkrumah's time in the U.S. had a lasting effect on his political views. He met several intellectuals who influenced his thinking on social movements. In 1945, he moved to London to continue his studies at the London School of Economics.

Nkrumah returned to the Gold Coast to begin his political career. He formed the Convention People's Party, or CPP. This party had a massive appeal to common voters. Because of the CPP's success, Nkrumah became Prime Minister in 1952. In 1957, he led the nation to independence from British rule. This was a historic moment for sub-Saharan Africa. This meant Nkrumah was the president for life of both the nation and his party. He also used the Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute to spread his version of scientific socialism, known as Nkrumaism.

Nkrumah's time in power ended during a coup d'état in 1966.
