The Battle of Kosovo in 1389 was a defining moment. This battle involved a Serbian-led coalition fighting the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans eventually fully conquered the land. They ruled for nearly five centuries until 1912.

Modern history brought significant changes to the region. Kosovo was part of the Kingdom of Serbia after the Balkan Wars. After World War II, it became an Autonomous Province within Yugoslavia. Tensions between Albanian and Serb communities grew during the 20th century. This led to the Kosovo War in 1998 and 1999. Following the war, the United Nations established an interim administration. On 17 February 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia.

The name "Kosovo" has interesting linguistic roots. It comes from a South Slavic origin. The term refers to a "blackbird field." This is a karst field in the eastern part of the country.
