In 1997, a group of scientists named the animal. Anne Warren, Thomas Rich, and Patricia Vickers-Rich described it. They named the new species Koolasuchus cleelandi. They named it after Lesley Kool and Mike Cleeland.

New evidence arrived through different collectors in the late 1980s. In 1989, Lesley Kool found a temnospondyl intercentrum, which is a part of a vertebra. Around the same time, Mike Cleeland found a fragment of the skull roof on a beach.

These finds were vital for the scientific community. In 1997, paleontologists Anne Warren, Thomas Rich, and Patricia Vickers-Rich published a major description. They named the new species Koolasuchus cleelandi. The name honors Lesley Kool and Mike Cleeland for their discoveries. The name "Koolasuchus" also uses the Greek word "souchos," meaning crocodile, to describe its body shape.
