The teeth are replaced very quickly, roughly every 40 days. At any time, a dragon may have up to five replacement teeth for every single position. This high rate of replacement is similar to the crocodile monitor. The teeth are often covered in blood-tinged saliva because the gingival tissue is frequently lacerated during feeding.

Sensing the environment is vital for these solitary hunters. While they can see objects from 300 meters away, they likely have poor night vision. Their retinas contain only cones, which affects their ability to see in the dark.

Instead, they rely heavily on their long, yellow, forked tongues to detect stimuli. They use the vomeronasal sense, involving the Jacobson's organ, to taste and smell the air. To further repel predators, young dragons may roll in feces. Mating occurs between May and August, and they lay up to 20 eggs in September.
