The history of the Komi people goes back a long time. Traders from the Novgorod Republic first met them in the 11th century. These traders were looking for furs and animal hides. Later, the Moscow principality grew more powerful in the area. In the 1400s and 1500s, many monks arrived too. A missionary named Stephen of Perm even made an alphabet for the Komi. This helped the people record their own language. The capital city, Syktyvkar, began to grow in the 1500s.

In the 1900s, the region changed a lot. The Komi-Zyryan Autonomous Oblast was formed in 1921. Later, in 1936, it became the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Many people came to the area during this time. Some were prisoners sent to work in the Arctic.

The history of the Komi people dates back many centuries. In the 11th century, traders from the Novgorod Republic arrived. They traveled to the Perm region to find furs and animal hides. They called these lands Zavolochye, which means "beyond the portage." Later, the Moscow principality expanded its influence into these territories. During the 14th and 15th centuries, monastic activity increased significantly. A missionary named Stephen of Perm created the first alphabet for the Komi people. This helped preserve their culture and language.

The 20th century brought massive changes to the republic. On August 22, 1921, the Komi-Zyryan Autonomous Oblast was established. By December 5, 1936, it became the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
