Knoxville is a major city located in Knox County, Tennessee, within the United States.

The history of the land began long before modern cities existed. Indigenous people established substantial settlements during the Woodland period, which lasted from 1000 B.C. to 1000 A.D. One of the oldest artificial structures in the area is a burial mound from the Mississippian culture period.
European settlement increased significantly after the French and Indian War ended in 1763. In 1786, a Revolutionary War officer named James White built White's Fort near First Creek. Shortly after, Charles McClung surveyed the land to establish a formal town. He divided the area into sixty-four lots, including spaces for a church, a graveyard, and a school. This school eventually became Blount College, the foundation of the University of Tennessee. In 1790, President George Washington appointed William Blount as governor of the Territory South of the River Ohio. Blount named the new capital Knoxville after General Henry Knox.
Knoxville’s early economy relied heavily on its position as a river town. The confluence of three major rivers allowed for significant steamboat and flatboat traffic.
