The most common injuries include cuts and bruises to the hands. Flakes entering the eye are also a frequent problem.

Today, knapping is practiced by several different groups. Most people no longer make stone tools for daily survival. Instead, experimental archaeologists use knapping to understand prehistoric life. In the United States, interest was sparked by Ishi, a California Native American. He taught scholars traditional methods for survival in the wild. In England, some people still use knapping for building work. They create flint walls or decorative flushwork.
