Kittens are born after about 66 days. When they are born, they need help to stay alive. They cannot keep their bodies warm for three weeks. They also need their mother to help them go to the bathroom.

Mother's milk is very important. It has colostrum, which is a special milk from the first few days. This milk gives them antibodies. These are tiny parts that help protect them from germs.

Kittens open their eyes after seven to ten days. At first, their sight is not very good. By ten weeks, they see much better.

Kittens grow very fast. They start to eat solid food at three to four weeks. This is called weaning. They lose baby teeth around three months of age. They have all their adult teeth by nine months. Kittens are social and love to play. They use play to learn how to hunt.

These small animals are very dependent on their mothers at first. This state is called primary altriciality. It means they need help to stay alive and grow. Most kittens are born in a group called a litter. A litter usually has between two and five kittens.

However, some litters can have only one or even more than ten. Kittens are born after a gestation period. This is the time the mother is pregnant. This lasts between 64 and 67 days on average.

When kittens are born, they emerge in a sac called the amnion.

The mother cat bites this sac off and eats it. For the first three weeks, kittens cannot control their body heat. They can die from hypothermia if they are not kept warm. They also need their mother to help them go to the bathroom.

Mother's milk is vital for their nutrition. It also gives them antibodies to fight diseases. These special antibodies come from colostrum. Colostrum is the milk produced in the first few days after birth.

Kittens grow and change very quickly. They usually open their eyes after seven to ten days.

Weaning is usually finished by six to eight weeks. Kittens lose their baby teeth around three months of age. They have a full set of adult teeth by nine months.

Learning to be a predator is a big part of growing up.

Kittens practice hunting and stalking through play. Their mothers help by bringing live prey to the nest. The mothers also show them hunting techniques to copy. Kittens are very social and love to play with others. Play with littermates peaks at three or four months. Solitary play, like hunting alone, peaks around five months.

Kittens have special needs to stay healthy. They are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They need lots of protein and fat to grow.

They need an amino acid called taurine. The mother cannot make enough taurine for them. If they do not get enough, they may have poor growth. They also need DHA to help their brains and eyes develop. In many places, it is illegal to give away kittens younger than eight weeks. Most kittens reach adulthood by one year of age.

A kitten is a juvenile cat. They are highly social animals that often enjoy companionship with humans.

Because they are born in a state of primary altriciality, they are completely dependent on their mothers for survival. This means they cannot regulate their own body temperature or perform basic bodily functions alone. Most kittens are born in a group known as a litter. While a typical litter contains two to five kittens, some can have as few as one or more than ten.

The process of development begins with a gestation period. This is the time the mother is pregnant, which averages 66 days.

When kittens are born, they emerge inside a sac called the amnion. The mother cat typically bites this sac off and eats it. For the first three weeks, kittens cannot regulate their body temperature. If temperatures are below 30°C, they may die from hypothermia without their mother's warmth. They also require their mother to stimulate them so they can urinate or defecate.

Nutrition is a critical part of a kitten's early survival. During the first few days, the mother produces colostrum. This specialized milk contains high concentrations of immunoglobulins, such as immunoglobulin A and G. These antibodies cross the neonatal intestinal barrier to build the kitten's immune system.

As they grow, kittens undergo weaning, which is the transition from milk to solid food. This usually begins at three to four weeks and is complete by six to eight weeks. While they eventually live on solid food, many kittens continue to suckle occasionally until they are separated from their mothers.

Kittens undergo several physical stages as they mature. They usually open their eyes seven to ten days after birth. However, their vision remains poor at first because the retina is not fully developed. They do not reach adult-level vision until about ten weeks of age. Between two and seven weeks, they develop rapid coordination and strength. They begin to lose their baby teeth around three months of age. By nine months, they have a complete set of adult teeth.

As natural carnivores, kittens have very specific dietary requirements to support their rapid growth. They require high levels of protein and fat, as energy needs can be 2.5 times higher than adult maintenance levels. They specifically need an amino acid called taurine, which the mother cannot produce in sufficient amounts. A deficiency in taurine can lead to poor growth and retinal degeneration. They also benefit from docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, which is an omega-3 fatty acid. DHA is vital for the development of the brain, cognition, and vision.

Social behavior and instinctual learning also define the kitten stage. Kittens practice their innate predatory skills through play-fighting and stalking games. Mothers assist this development by bringing live prey to the nest and demonstrating hunting techniques. Social interaction with littermates is very high, peaking in play during the third or fourth month. Solitary play, such as stalking, tends to peak later around five months.

Because they are curious, kittens are vulnerable to hiding in dangerous places, such as car engines or tires.

Health management is important for kittens entering domestic environments. In many societies, kittens receive vaccinations against diseases like feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), feline calicivirus (C), and feline panleukopenia (P). These are often given at eight, twelve, and sixteen weeks. Many kittens are also spayed or neutered, sometimes as early as seven weeks in animal shelters. While kittens can be sent to new homes at six to eight weeks, many experts suggest staying with the mother until twelve weeks for better social development. Most kittens reach sexual maturity at seven months and full adulthood by one year.
