This site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the past, the city was a center for making steel and coal. This helped Japan grow during a time called the Meiji period. However, these big industries caused a lot of pollution in the air and water. In the 1960s, the Dōkai Bay was so polluted it was called the "Sea of Death."

The city's name literally means "North Kyushu." It is divided into seven different wards. The administrative center is in Kokurakita-ku, which was once part of the city of Kokura. The city's symbol is a flower with five petals. Each petal represents one of the five cities that joined to make it.

Many people live and work in this busy area. As of June 2019, the population was about 940,978 people. This makes it the second-largest city in Fukuoka Prefecture. Kokura station is a very important place for travel. It is served by the San'yō Shinkansen, which is a high-speed railway. This area is also a popular place for shopping and fun. The city has faced many changes over the years. It has dealt with things like war and crime. Local authorities worked hard to reduce crime in the city. By 2023, the number of crimes was much lower than it had been in 2002.

Kitakyushu links many different parts of Japan together. It is part of the Fukuoka-Kitakyushu Greater Metropolitan Region. This region is very large and has over 5 million people. The city connects the island of Kyushu to the rest of the country. It has many ways to move people by land and sea. While some industries have slowed down, new businesses are moving there. The city is finding new ways to grow in the modern world. It continues to be a key part of the economy in western Japan.

It is located at the northern tip of Kyushu island. The city sits on the Kanmon Straits. This water separates Kyushu from the main island of Honshu. Across the water lies the city of Shimonoseki. Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki are linked by many paths. These include the Kanmon Bridge and three different tunnels. These are the roadway, railway, and Shin-Kanmon tunnels. Because of this, the city acts as a gateway to Kyushu. It is the starting point for many roads and railways on the island.

The city was formed on February 10, 1963. It was created by merging five different municipalities. These were Moji, Kokura, Wakamatsu, Yahata, and Tobata.

The city's symbol is a flower with five petals. Each petal represents one of the five original cities. The main administrative and economic hub is in Kokurakita-ku. This area was once the center of the city of Kokura. It is centered around Kokura station. This station is a major hub for the San'yō Shinkansen high-speed railway.

Kitakyushu is famous for its history of heavy industry. The Yahata Steel Works was the heart of this industry.

This site was chosen because of nearby coal and sea links to iron ore. The works opened in 1901. By 1913, Yahata produced 85% of all steel in Japan. This growth changed the area from a small fishing village into a massive industrial hub. The population of Yahata grew from 6,652 in 1901 to 100,235 by 1920. Today, these sites are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are part of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution."

Each of the five original cities had its own industrial role. Moji was a hub for international trade and food processing. Kokura was known for the defense industry. Wakamatsu served as the largest coal shipment hub in Japan. Yahata was dominated by steel production. Tobata focused on coal-related industries, textiles, and fishing.

These industries helped drive Japan's economic growth for many years. However, this rapid industrialization caused serious environmental problems. In the 1960s, Dōkai Bay was called the "Sea of Death." This was because industrial runoff caused severe water pollution. No living organisms could survive in the water at that time.

Kitakyushu faced many challenges during the Second World War. Its role as an industrial center made it a target for bombing. In June 1944, American B-29 aircraft attacked Yahata. In August 1945, Kokura was the primary target for a nuclear weapon. However, clouds and smoke prevented the pilot from seeing the target clearly. The smoke came from previous air raids and industrial workers releasing steam. Because the target was not clear, the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki instead. After the war, the region suffered from ruins and malnutrition. However, the Korean War in 1950 helped the steel industry recover. The high demand for steel pushed production back into overdrive.

In recent decades, the city has transformed its economy. As heavy industries declined, Kitakyushu moved toward the service sector. It also became a leader in environmental protection. After civic groups protested the pollution, the city worked with businesses to clean the water. Now, Kitakyushu calls itself an "environmental city" focused on green industry.

The city also works to attract new business through the Kitakyushu Film Commission. It has even redeveloped parts of the steel works into the Space World theme park. This was done to improve the city's image and promote tourism.

Today, Kitakyushu is part of the Fukuoka-Kitakyushu Greater Metropolitan Region.

This is the fourth largest economic area in Japan. As of June 2019, the city had about 940,978 people. This makes it the second-largest city in Fukuoka Prefecture. While the population has declined recently, the city remains important. It has faced issues with crime and an aging population. However, local authorities have successfully reduced crime by 87% since 2002. New businesses are also starting to move to the city again. Kitakyushu continues to be a vital part of western Japan.
