Waste then moves through a short hind-gut to an anus at the end of the trunk.
Kinorhynchs also possess complex nervous and excretory systems. Their nervous system features a ventral nerve cord with one ganglion, or nerve cluster, in each segment. An anterior nerve ring also surrounds the pharynx. They use tiny bristles on their bodies to sense touch. While they lack a circulatory system to pump blood, they have a well-developed body cavity called a pseudocoelom. This cavity contains amoebocytes, which help move materials through the body. Their excretory system uses two protonephridia that empty through pores in the final segment.
Scientists have a long history of studying these animals and their ancestors. The oldest known species is *Eokinorhynchus*, which lived during the Cambrian period in China. This ancient species was much larger than modern mud dragons. It had about twice as many body segments as the species we see today. Modern research has updated our understanding of their relationships. Scientists now use molecular data and morphology to organize them into new groups like the order Allomalorhagida.
The diversity of kinorhynchs is quite large for such small animals. There are more than 300 described species across 31 genera and 11 families.
