At that time, the area was ruled by Denmark-Norway under Christian VII. However, the Eider Canal was quite small. It was only 22 meters wide and had a depth of 1.5 meters. This meant only ships weighing up to 300 tonnes could use it. After the Second Schleswig War in 1864, Prussia took control of Schleswig-Holstein. Merchants and the German navy then pushed for a much larger, modern canal. 
Construction on the modern Kiel Canal began in June 1887 at Holtenau. It was a massive undertaking that required over 9,000 workers. The project took eight years to complete. Kaiser Wilhelm II officially opened the canal on June 20, 1895. The next day, he held a ceremony in Holtenau to lay the final stone. He named the waterway the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal after his grandfather. British director Birt Acres even filmed the opening ceremony. This early footage is now kept at the Science Museum in London. 
To keep up with growing needs, the canal has undergone several expansions. Between 1907 and 1914, Germany widened the canal for dreadnought battleships.
