In 1793, following the Second Partition of Poland, the city was annexed by the Russian Empire. It was renamed Proskurov during this time. In 1954, the city was renamed Khmelnytskyi. This change honored Bohdan Khmelnytsky, a famous Cossack hetman. 
The 20th century brought significant and often tragic changes to the population. During the interwar period, the city was contested by various groups. In 1919, a violent event known as the Proskurov pogrom occurred. This resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1,500 Jews in the city. During World War II, the German Army occupied the city from 1941 to 1944. The Holocaust severely impacted the local community. In 1939, the Jewish population was 42 percent, but by 1959, it had fallen to 10 percent. More than 9,500 Jews were killed in the town during the occupation. 
In modern times, Khmelnytskyi remains a vital hub for transportation and education. It is a major rail junction, making it a central point for travel.
