Scholars offer several theories regarding the origin of the name Khartoum. One possibility is that it comes from Dinka words meaning "place where rivers meet." This is supported by history placing the Dinka homeland in this region. Another theory suggests an Arabic origin referring to the narrow strip of land between the rivers. Captain J.A. Grant once suggested the name came from the Arabic word for a plant used for oil. Some believe it stems from the Nubian word for "the abode of Atum," a creator god. Beja scholars suggest it may come from a word meaning "meeting." Even the Maasai language has a similar term, though its meaning is "we have acquired."
The modern history of Khartoum began in 1821.

Conflict has shaped the city's development through many eras. In 1884, the Mahdist War led to the Siege of Khartoum.
Khartoum has faced significant political and social challenges in recent decades. In 1973, a hostage crisis occurred at the Saudi Embassy. The city also saw large numbers of refugees from neighboring nations like Chad and Ethiopia. In 1998, the United States launched missile attacks on a pharmaceutical factory in Khartoum North. More recently, the city experienced the Khartoum massacre in 2019 during the Sudanese Revolution. Between 2023 and 2025, intense combat occurred during a civil war. This fighting involved the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The conflict affected critical sites like the Khartoum International Airport. In 2025, the armed forces recaptured the city, though widespread destruction remained.
Despite these struggles, Khartoum remains a center for culture and education.
