A major turning point occurred during the Chadian-Libyan conflict between 1978 and 1987. By 1986, Haftar held the rank of colonel. He served as the chief officer for Libyan forces in Chad during the final phase, known as the Toyota War.
Haftar eventually left Africa and moved to the United States around 1990. This move happened following a deal involving the United States government. 
In 2014, Haftar launched a new military campaign known as Operation Dignity. He aimed this campaign against the General National Congress (GNC) and its Islamic fundamentalist allies.
Haftar's political influence extends to many international relationships. 

Throughout his life, Haftar has been involved in many complex political and military systems. He has fought alongside and against nearly every major faction in Libya. In November 2021, he announced his candidacy for the presidential election. Although he is considered an anti-Islamist, he has used Salafi Madkhali militias as allies for geopolitical reasons. His history reflects the deep divisions and shifting alliances within the modern Libyan state.
