If you start on the note C, you do not need any sharps or flats. This is called C major. If you start on D, you must change two notes to keep the pattern. This creates a key signature with two sharps, which are F and C.

Each symbol applies to every version of that note throughout the whole section. For example, a flat on one line affects all similar notes on all octaves.

There is a special way that these keys are organized. Musicians use a tool called the circle of fifths to understand them.

This circle shows how sharps and flats are added in a specific order. For sharps, the order is F, C, G, D, A, E, and B. For flats, the order is the opposite.

However, some music uses double sharps or double flats. These are very hard to read, so musicians often use a different key that sounds the same instead. For example, the composer Claude Debussy used different keys in his piece "Clair de lune." Some instruments, like the timpani, might not show a key signature at all. Other instruments, called transposing instruments, show a different signature to help them play the right notes. This helps everyone in the orchestra play together in the same concert key.

If you begin this pattern on C, no notes require alteration. This is the C major scale, which has no sharps or flats. However, starting on other notes requires changes to maintain the pattern. For example, starting on D requires two sharps on F and C to create a D major scale.

Musicians organize these keys using a system called the circle of fifths. This system follows a uniform and predictable order for adding symbols. For sharps, the order is F, C, G, D, A, E, and B. For flats, the order is the reverse: B, E, A, D, G, C, and F.

For example, the key of G major could theoretically require eight sharps. This would involve an F double-sharp. Most musicians prefer to use an enharmonically equivalent key instead. An enharmonic equivalent is a different name for a note that sounds exactly the same. For instance, a composer might use A-flat major instead of G-sharp major to make the music easier to read. Claude Debussy used such shifts in his work, "Clair de lune."

Understanding key signatures connects musicians to the broader mathematical logic of music. The relationship between keys is a function of how intervals and steps interact.
