As a major urban area, it hosts a large population. Estimates for the functional urban area reach 391,153 people. Other statistics place the combined population of the city and district at 447,946. Thousands of students also move to the city every year to attend tertiary education institutions.

The name Kaunas has several possible origins. It is a Lithuanian name that likely comes from a personal name. This person may have been the ruler of the local castle. The name might also come from an old adjective meaning "deep" or "in a valley."

There is also a legend involving the Romans. This folk history claims a Roman named Palemon fled to Lithuania. He was fleeing the Emperor Nero. Palemon had three sons named Barcus, Kunas, and Sperus. According to the legend, Kunas built a fortress where the city stands. The city was then named after him.

The early history of Kaunas is defined by military importance. A brick castle was built in the late 13th century. This castle helped defend the region from the Teutonic Order.

In 1362, the Teutonic Order captured and destroyed the castle. This was a major military victory for the Crusaders. The Lithuanians later built wooden castles on the island of Virgalė. These were also attacked and burned by the Crusaders in 1363 and 1368. Eventually, the Lithuanians took control of the area in 1404. This ended the long period of fighting for the territory.

After the wars, Kaunas became a prosperous center of trade. It sat at the intersection of important trade routes. In 1441, the city joined the Hanseatic League. This was a powerful commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds. Kaunas was the only location in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to host a Hanseatic Kontor, or merchant office. By the 16th century, the city had established a public school and a hospital. It had become one of the most established towns in the country. Prosperity led to the construction of many brick masonry buildings.

The city has maintained distinct symbols through the centuries. In 1408, Vytautas the Great granted Kaunas its city rights. He also chose the city's coat of arms, which features an aurochs. An aurochs is a large, extinct type of wild ox. The official coat of arms shows a white aurochs with a golden cross between its horns.

This symbol was set against a deep red background. In 1993, the historical coat of arms was re-established by a presidential decree. The city also uses a greater coat of arms for official representation. This version includes a sailor and the Latin phrase "Diligite justitiam qui judicatis terram."

A major turning point occurred between 1920 and 1939. During this time, Kaunas served as the temporary capital of Lithuania. This was because Vilnius had been seized and became part of Poland. This interwar period was a golden age for the city. Kaunas became famous for its fashion and café culture. It also saw massive construction projects. Architects built many buildings in the Art Deco style. They also used the Lithuanian National Revival style.

In 2023, it became a World Heritage Site. This status recognizes the city as a unique example of large-scale interwar urbanization.
