Preparing for a show is a big job.

Kathakali has a long and interesting history. Some say its roots are 1,500 years old. It became its own special style during the 16th and 17th centuries. It grew from older arts like Krishnanattam. This was a dance-drama about the god Krishna. A ruler named Kottarakkara Thampuran helped create a new style called Ramanattam. This was based on the epic story of the Ramayana. Over time, Ramanattam grew and became the Kathakali we see today.
Many old rules guide these performances. Much of this comes from an ancient text called the Natya Shastra. This text was written by a sage named Bharata. It was put together between 200 BC and 200 AD. The text has about 6,000 verses in 36 chapters. It teaches about expressions, gestures, and even how to stand.
In the past, plays were very long. They would start at dusk and go until the sun came up.
Kathakali is a highly complex form of Indian classical dance and theatre.
A Kathakali performance is structured around plays called Attakatha, which means "enacted story."
The technical elements of the dance are guided by ancient principles. Much of the theory comes from the Natya Shastra, a text attributed to the sage Bharata. This text was compiled between 200 BC and 200 AD. It contains about 6,000 verses organized into 36 chapters. The Natya Shastra describes the theory of rasa, or expression, and bhava, or emotion. It also details gestures, acting techniques, and basic standing postures.
Kathakali has a deep history connected to older theatrical traditions. It is closely related to Koodiyattam, which is considered one of the oldest continuously performed theatre forms in the world.
The visual aspect of Kathakali is famous for its elaborate costumes and makeup.

Performances have traditionally been long and demanding events. In the past, a play might start at dusk and continue all the way through dawn.
Kathakali connects deeply to Indian philosophy and social structures. The character types are often linked to the Guṇa theory from the Samkhya school of Hindu philosophy. This theory describes three qualities present in all beings: goodness, passion, and darkness. The makeup and movements reflect the proportions of these qualities within a character. By combining martial arts, complex literature, and philosophical symbolism, Kathakali serves as a powerful method of expressing spiritual ideas and virtues through art.
