This location also defines the eastern limit of the Sea of Crete. Because of its remote setting, Karpathos has kept many unique traditions. The local dialect is similar to the speech found in Crete and Cyprus.

The physical geography of Karpathos is defined by its varied coastline and climate. The island has a hot semi-arid climate, which is classified as BSh. This means the weather is generally dry and warm. However, the island experiences some of the mildest winters in Europe. The highest point on the island is a peak called Kali Limni. The island was closely linked to Rhodes during ancient and medieval times. In 431 BCE, the Karpathians supported Sparta during the Peloponnesian War. They later lost their independence to Rhodes in 400 BCE. Rome took control of the island in 42 BCE. After the Roman Empire divided in 395 CE, Karpathos became part of the Byzantine Empire. The island also served as a see for the Latin Church in the 14th century.

Many different powers ruled the island through the centuries. In 1304, the island was a fief for Genoese corsairs. Later, the Venetian Cornaro family controlled it until 1538. After that, the Ottoman Turks held power for many years. During the Greek War of Independence, the island rebelled between 1821 and 1822. In 1835, Sultan Mahmud II allowed a special tax system called maktu. This meant taxes were a single annual sum rather than based on households. Italian forces occupied the island in 1912 during the Italo-Turkish War. Italy held the island until 1943, followed by a period of German occupation. Karpathos finally joined the Kingdom of Greece on March 7, 1948.

Modern life on the island is shaped by both locals and visitors. In 2021, the census recorded 6,567 inhabitants in the municipality. However, this number can grow to 20,000 during the summer months. This increase is due to tourists and Karpathian expatriates returning home. The population is highest on August 15 during the Panagias festival.

Many people travel from around the world to attend this important event. In the mid-20th century, many residents emigrated to the eastern United States. Today, many Greek-Americans return to the island to invest in their heritage.

Within the island, most people use cars to travel between villages. There are also municipal buses and taxis available all year. During the summer, small boats depart from Pigadia. These boats allow people to reach Olympos or visit secluded beaches.
