Karaj is a major urban center in Iran. It serves as the capital of Alborz province. It is also the capital of its county and district.
The climate in Karaj is quite distinct. It is a bit cooler than the nearby city of Tehran. The city uses a cold semi-arid climate classification. This is known as the Köppen-Geiger BSk system. It receives about 250 mm of rain every year. This precipitation pattern is similar to a Mediterranean climate. Natural resources like trees and rivers help shape this environment.
History in this region stretches back thousands of years. Evidence shows people lived here during the Bronze Age at Tepe Khurvin. There are also Iron Age sites like Kalak. The modern city grew significantly under the Safavid and Qajar empires. During the Safavid era, a stone bridge was built. This bridge was the main crossing into the town. The Shah-Abbasi Caravansary was also built during this time. It was constructed under the rule of Šāh Esmāil. In 1810, Prince Soleyman Mirza built the Soleymaniyeh Palace. This palace featured four towers and beautiful gardens. Later, the Morvarid Palace was built in the Mehršahr district.
Industrial development changed the city in the 20th century. In the 1930s, planners wanted a large industrial complex. They planned a "Model Town" for steel mills. This would use water and coal from the Alborz mountains. However, the project failed because of World War II. British forces impounded the necessary German equipment in 1940. Later, in the 1960s, Mohammad-Sadeq Fateh built Shahrak-e Jahanshahr. This was the first private industrial complex in Karaj. It included factories for tea, oil, and textiles. This industrial zone is very important today. It holds a 20% share of the national GDP.
The economy relies heavily on proximity to Tehran. Karaj helps transport products between Tehran and the Caspian Sea. The city produces chemicals and fertilizers. It also produces processed agricultural goods. One special area is the Payam Special Economic Zone. This zone is located near Payam International Airport.
Transportation in Karaj is highly developed. The city is connected to Tehran by a major highway. This road is one of the busiest in Iran.

Education and sports are also vital to the city. Karaj is home to several large research centers. These include Kharazmi University and the University of Tehran's agriculture college.
