These waters help the local environment stay green and healthy.

The history of this land goes back a very long time. The ancestors of the Kabardins lived here since at least the 6th century BCE. They once had a kingdom known as Zichia. Over many centuries, different groups controlled the area. The Mongols ruled from 1242 to 1295. Later, the Georgians governed the region for a while. This republic shares an international border with the country of Georgia to the south and southwest.

The geography of the region is defined by the North Caucasus mountains. The land is bordered by several Russian regions. To the north and northeast, it meets Stavropol Krai. To the east, southeast, and south, it borders North Ossetia–Alania. To the west and northwest, it is adjacent to Karachay–Cherkessia. The climate is described as a continental-type climate. This means the weather can change significantly between seasons. Annual precipitation levels range from 500 mm to 2,000 mm.

Mount Elbrus is the most significant geological feature in the republic. It is a volcanic mountain and holds the title of the highest peak in Europe, Russia, and the Caucasus. The mountain reaches an elevation of 5,642 meters. Because of its height, it remains covered in snow throughout the entire year. Mount Elbrus contains 22 glaciers. These glaciers act as a water source for the region. They feed three specific rivers: the Baksan, the Malka, and the Kuban. Other massive peaks include Mount Dykhtau at 5,402 meters and Mount Koshtantau at 5,151 meters.

Water systems are abundant throughout the mountainous terrain. The Terek River is the longest major river, stretching 623 km. Other notable rivers include the Malka River at 216 km and the Baksan River at 173 km. The Urukh, Chegem, and Cherek rivers also flow through the area. In addition to rivers, there are approximately 100 lakes in the republic. While none are considered large, they are widely distributed. Over half of these lakes, totaling 55, are located between the Baksan and Malka rivers. Tserikkel Lake is one of the deepest, reaching 368 meters.

The history of the region spans thousands of years. The ancestors of the modern Kabardians, also called Circassians, have lived here since at least the 6th century BCE. In ancient times, the area was known as Zichia. The Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea recorded that the Zechoi people had a king. Between 1242 and 1295, the Mongols controlled the region. From 1295 to approximately 1427, Georgian rule was established. In the early 15th century, a unified Circassian Kingdom formed. This kingdom remained independent until King Inal died in 1453.

Political changes continued through the following centuries. The Russo-Circassian War took place between 1769 and 1830. This conflict led to the Russian annexation of the territory. During the Soviet era, Kabardino-Balkaria was part of the Russian SFSR. After the collapse of the USSR, it became a republic within Russia. In 1994, the republic signed a power-sharing agreement for limited autonomy. However, a new constitution adopted in 2001 reaffirmed its status within the Russian Federation. This constitution explicitly prevents the republic from existing independently.

The population is composed of several distinct ethnic groups. The Kabardins are the largest group, making up 57.1% of the population. They speak a North-West Caucasian language. The Balkars represent 13.7% of the people and speak a Turkic language. Russians make up 19.8% of the residents. Other groups include the Cherkess at 3.0% and Turks at 1.9%. Religious identity is also diverse. A 2012 survey showed that 70.8% of the population adheres to Islam. Meanwhile, 11.6% belong to the Russian Orthodox Church.

Life expectancy data shows variations in health outcomes. In recent years, the average life expectancy was recorded at 76.5 years. This figure breaks down to 72.6 years for males and 79.9 years for females. The government is led by a Head, with Kazbek Kokov serving in the role. The legislative power rests with a Parliament consisting of 70 deputies. These deputies are elected to serve five-year terms.
