To organize his observations, Kaṇāda used six specific categories called padārthas. These categories are nameable and knowable. They are sufficient to describe everything in the universe, including observers. The first is dravya, which means substance. The second is guṇa, or quality. The third is karma, which refers to action or motion. The fourth is sāmānya, meaning generality or commonness. The fifth is viśeṣa, or particularity. The sixth is samavāya, which is known as inherence. These categories allow for a detailed analysis of reality.

Within the category of dravya, Kaṇāda identified nine distinct classes of substances. Some substances are atomic, while others are non-atomic. Some are even described as all-pervasive. The nine constituents include earth, water, light, and air. He also included space (akāṣa), time (kāla), and direction (diśa). Finally, he listed the infinity of souls (Ātman) and the mind (manas).
