Just Louis Fontaine was a legendary French professional footballer. He played as a striker, which is a position focused on scoring goals. Fontaine is most famous for his incredible scoring record in international play. He holds the record for the most goals scored by one player in a single FIFA World Cup tournament. This historic feat occurred during the 1958 World Cup.
Fontaine's journey began in Marrakech, French Morocco, in 1933. He was born to a French father and a Spanish mother. He later moved to Casablanca to attend the Lycée Lyautey. His amateur career started at USM Casablanca from 1950 to 1953. He was highly productive there, scoring 62 goals in 48 matches. In 1953, the club Nice recruited him to play in Division 1.
In 1956, Fontaine moved to Stade de Reims to continue his professional career. He became a vital part of a very successful team. During the 1959–60 season, he played alongside the famous Raymond Kopa. Fontaine scored 121 goals during his six seasons with the club. He helped Stade de Reims win the Division 1 championship twice, in 1958 and 1960. He also helped the team reach the 1958–59 European Cup final. During that European Cup season, he was the top scorer with ten goals.
Fontaine's performance for the France national team was equally impressive. He made his debut on December 17, 1953, against Luxembourg. In that very first match, he scored a hat trick. However, those players achieved their totals over at least two different tournaments. Fontaine reached his tally in just one. This distinction highlights his incredible efficiency as a striker.
His playing career ended earlier than many expected. In July 1962, at the age of 28 years and 11 months, he was forced to retire.
