The first four vessels he commanded, such as the *Washington* and the *Constitution*, were owned by others. Later, he owned four ships himself. One of his first owned vessels was the *Pato*. This was a 90-ton schooner he received in the Philippines. He used the *Pato* as a general freight carrier along the North American coast. He also used it for voyages between San Francisco and Hawaii. Owning his own ship gave him a new sense of freedom and autonomy.

His personal life was also deeply tied to the sea. In 1871, he married Virginia Albertina Walker in Sydney, Australia.

The couple had seven children, most of whom were born at sea or in foreign ports. Four of their children survived to adulthood. Slocum faced many trials while sailing with his family. In Alaska, he saved his crew and cargo after the *Washington* was wrecked in a gale. Later, his ship, the *Aquidneck*, was wrecked in southern Brazil in 1887. This loss left his family stranded in a foreign land.

To return home, Slocum demonstrated incredible resourcefulness. He built a new boat using local materials and parts salvaged from the *Aquidneck*. He launched this vessel on May 13, 1888. This was the same day slavery was abolished in Brazil. He named the boat *Liberdade*, which is the Portuguese word for freedom. The boat had a unique design. Slocum described it as being half Cape Ann dory and half Japanese sampan. He and his family sailed the *Liberdade* for 5,510 miles. They finally reached the United States in 1889.

Slocum's later years included complex maritime tasks. In the winter of 1893–94, he delivered a ship called the *Destroyer* to Brazil. The *Destroyer* was a steam-powered torpedo boat. It was an evolution of the *Monitor* warship type from the American Civil War. This vessel was designed by the inventor John Ericsson. It featured sloping armor plates and a bow-mounted submarine gun. The ship was intended to defend harbors by firing torpedoes at close range. Delivering such a specialized vessel required significant skill and precision.

In his final years, Slocum sailed the *Spray*.

This boat became a symbol of his enduring spirit. He continued to write and share his maritime knowledge. However, Slocum disappeared in November 1909 while aboard the *Spray*.

His disappearance marked the end of a life lived almost entirely on the water. He remains a significant figure in maritime history. His ability to navigate the globe alone changed how people viewed the possibilities of solo sailing. He proved that a single person could master the vastness of the world's oceans.
