In Missouri, they hoped to build a central place called Zion. Joseph also supervised the building of the Kirtland Temple.

Life for the early followers was often difficult and unsettled. The group faced many struggles in Missouri and Ohio. After some legal and social troubles, they moved to Illinois.

There, Joseph helped found the city of Nauvoo. It became the second-largest city in Illinois while he was mayor.

Joseph even started a campaign to run for president in 1844. However, his leadership and certain practices caused strong opposition from others. This tension grew when a printing press was destroyed. This event led to more conflict with local authorities.

Joseph Smith's life ended during a time of great unrest. He surrendered to authorities in Illinois to seek protection. While he was held in a jailhouse, a mob attacked the building. Joseph was shot and killed during this violent event in 1844.

Even though his life was short, his impact was huge. He left behind many written texts that his followers call scripture.

Smith described these plates as containing a Judeo-Christian history of an ancient American civilization. He later claimed to have translated these plates into English using a seer stone.

As the movement grew, it faced intense social and legal opposition. In Ohio, the church-sponsored Kirtland Safety Society bank collapsed. In Missouri, violent skirmishes with non-Mormon residents escalated into a state-ordered expulsion.

Smith and his followers eventually moved to Illinois. There, they established the city of Nauvoo. During his time as mayor, Nauvoo became the second-largest city in Illinois. Smith also entered the political arena by launching a presidential campaign in 1844.

Conflict in Nauvoo arose from Smith's leadership and certain religious practices. Some of his associates criticized his practice of polygamy. Tension increased when the Nauvoo City Council ordered the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor printing press. This press had published criticisms of Smith's power. Consequently, Smith faced legal challenges and was arrested. He surrendered to Illinois authorities, expecting to receive bail. However, he was also charged with treason for declaring martial law.

Joseph Smith's life ended during a violent attack on a jailhouse. In June 1844, a mob stormed the Carthage Jail. Smith attempted to defend himself with a smuggled pistol. He was shot and killed during the confrontation.

His death left a profound impact on his followers. Many of his written works were later canonized as scripture by various denominations.
