His professional journey began with a deep study of economics. Den Uyl earned a Master of Economics degree from the University of Amsterdam. During World War II, he worked as a civil servant for the Ministry of Economic Affairs. He also participated in the resistance by working with the underground newspaper, Het Parool. After the war, he worked as a journalist and editor for several publications. From 1949 to 1963, he directed the Wiardi Beckman Foundation. This foundation serves as the think tank for the Labour Party. These early roles built his expertise in both economics and political strategy.

Den Uyl’s political rise involved several key legislative positions. He first entered the House of Representatives in 1956 after the number of seats increased to 150. In 1965, he was appointed Minister of Economic Affairs. During this time, he made the difficult decision to close uneconomic coal mines in Limburg. This choice led to high unemployment in that specific region. By 1967, he became the Parliamentary leader for his party. This position allowed him to prepare for the highest office in the land. He eventually became Prime Minister following the 1972 elections.

As Prime Minister, Den Uyl led a coalition cabinet. This government included members from the Catholic People's Party and the Anti-Revolutionary Party. His leadership was tested by several major international and domestic crises. In 1973, the oil crisis occurred following the Yom Kippur War. Because of the oil boycott, Den Uyl had to implement fuel rationing. He even introduced a ban on driving on Sundays to manage resources. He also had to navigate the Lockheed bribery scandals and various Moluccan incidents.

Despite economic challenges, Den Uyl focused on a massive redistributive agenda. A redistributive agenda aims to move wealth to help those in need. During his term, the government budget deficit grew tenfold and inflation reached nearly 10 percent. However, real incomes for many citizens actually increased. The real disposable income for the "modal worker" grew by 10.3 percent. Minimum wage earners saw a 17.8 percent increase. Retired people experienced a significant rise of 27.3 percent.

His government enacted many progressive social reforms to improve daily life. In 1974, the Primary Education Act gave more freedom to school heads. The government also provided extra money and teachers to schools with low-income students. In 1975, nursery school fees were abolished entirely. New laws also protected employees during pregnancy and for 12 weeks after childbirth. To help the elderly, the government reduced health insurance premiums for those relying on the AOW pension. They also provided grants to help tenants move to better homes. These reforms were designed to create a fairer society for all citizens.

Den Uyl was a major figure on the global political stage. He met with many world leaders during his career.
