John Maynard Keynes was a very important thinker from England.
Keynes looked at how spending affects a whole nation. He called this "aggregate demand." He thought that if people and businesses do not spend enough, the economy suffers. This can lead to many people losing their jobs. He argued that wages do not always drop easily to fix these problems. Instead, he said governments should use special rules to help. These rules include fiscal and monetary policies to stop hard times.
Keynes grew up in a family that loved learning.
He did many important jobs during his life.
His ideas have helped many countries through big crises.
John Maynard Keynes was a highly influential English economist.
Keynes developed a specific way to look at economic activity. He focused on a concept called aggregate demand. This term refers to the total amount of spending in an economy. Keynes argued that this level of spending determines how much economic activity occurs. If aggregate demand is too low, the economy can suffer. This can lead to long periods of high unemployment. He noted that wages and labor costs are often "rigid downwards." This means they do not drop quickly enough to fix economic problems automatically. Because of this, he believed the economy would not always fix itself.
To solve these problems, Keynes suggested using specific government tools. He advocated for the use of fiscal and monetary policies. Fiscal policy involves how a government spends money or collects taxes. Monetary policy involves managing the supply of money. He believed these tools could lessen the bad effects of recessions and depressions.
Keynes had a very strong start in his education.
His professional career involved many different roles.

Keynes's influence has risen and fallen at different times. By the late 1930s, many Western economies used his ideas. Almost all capitalist governments adopted his policies within twenty years of his death in 1946. However, his influence began to fade in the 1970s. This was partly due to stagflation in Britain and the United States. During this time, economists like Milton Friedman and other monetarists criticized his views. They disputed if governments could successfully regulate the business cycle with fiscal policy.
Keynesian ideas saw a major resurgence during the 2008 financial crisis. His theories provided the basis for policies used by many world leaders. For example, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Gordon Brown used these ideas. Time magazine named him one of the Most Important People of the Century in 1999. They noted that his radical ideas may have saved capitalism. Beyond economics, Keynes was a member of the Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals. He was also a director of the Bank of England. He remains one of the most famous economists of the 20th century.
