Baird achieved several major milestones in the late 1920s. In July 1928, he demonstrated the first color television transmission. He used scanning discs at both the transmitting and receiving ends. These discs featured three spirals of apertures, each paired with a different primary color filter. He also demonstrated stereoscopic television during this same year. In 1928, his company, the Baird Television Development Company, achieved the first transatlantic transmission. This sent signals from London to Hartsdale, New York. 
Broadcasting became a major part of Baird's career in the 1930s. In 1929, he helped launch the first official television programs on the BBC. He also established the first television company in France. By 1931, the BBC was broadcasting his first live outside broadcast, which was a race called The Derby. He even developed large-scale theatre projection systems. These screens could be as large as two feet by five feet. By 1939, he used these large screens to televise a boxing match. 
Despite his successes, the mechanical system eventually faced competition. In 1936, the BBC began alternating between Baird's 240-line system and EMI's electronic scanning system. The BBC eventually stopped using the Baird system in February 1937. This decision followed a fire at the Crystal Palace facilities. Additionally, the BBC found the Baird system difficult to use for mobile broadcasting. The cameras required heavy developer tanks, hoses, and cables. Eventually, fully electronic systems like the Emitron camera tube replaced mechanical methods. These new systems were more efficient and easier to move around.
Baird's legacy is recognized by many scientific and engineering institutions. In 2006, the National Library of Scotland named him one of the ten greatest Scottish scientists. In 2015, he was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.
