Things became difficult when Great Britain began to tax the colonies. The British Parliament passed laws like the Sugar Act in 1764. These laws were meant to raise money for Britain. Many colonists felt these taxes were very unfair. They believed they should not be taxed without their consent. Hancock began to join the protest against these rules. He helped organize boycotts of British goods. This made him very popular in Massachusetts.

John Hancock was a prominent American statesman and a leading Patriot during the American Revolution.
Hancock's path to wealth began with his family in Braintree, Massachusetts. He was born on January 23, 1737, to Colonel John Hancock Jr. and Mary Hawke Thaxter. When his father died in 1744, John was raised by his uncle, Thomas Hancock. Thomas owned a successful firm called the House of Hancock. This business imported manufactured goods from Britain and exported items like rum, whale oil, and fish.
As Hancock grew in wealth, he also entered the world of politics. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge of St. Andrew in 1762, which connected him to influential Boston citizens. He was elected as a selectman in Boston in March 1765. During this time, he became a protégé of Samuel Adams, a famous leader of the "Patriot" or "Whig" party.
Tensions between the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain rose due to new taxes. Following the Seven Years' War, the British Parliament needed money to pay off debts. They passed the Sugar Act in 1764 to tax colonial imports. This caused outrage in Boston because colonists had no representation in Parliament. Hancock initially criticized the tax for economic reasons rather than constitutional ones. However, he soon joined the resistance by participating in boycotts of British goods. This political shift helped him gain election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1766.
British authorities specifically targeted Hancock as they tried to enforce new trade laws. The Townshend Acts of 1767 created new duties on imports and strengthened the American Customs Board. These regulations were meant to reduce smuggling, which many merchants used to avoid taxes.
A more serious conflict occurred involving Hancock's sloop, the *Liberty*. In May 1768, the *Liberty* arrived in Boston Harbor carrying a shipment of Madeira wine. Customs officials suspected that Hancock had unloaded extra cargo at night to avoid paying duties.
Hancock's legacy is most visible in the documents that founded the United States. He signed the Articles of Confederation and used his influence to help ratify the United States Constitution in 1788. Most famously, he signed the Declaration of Independence with a very large, stylish signature.
