The city's rapid growth began with a massive gold rush. In June 1884, Jan Gerritse Bantjes discovered a gold reef. This occurred on the farm Vogelstruisfontein. This discovery triggered a rush of people to the area. The city was officially established in 1886.

Within only ten years, the population grew to over 100,000 people. This was one of the fastest growth rates ever seen. The first gold was crushed using a machine owned by the Struben brothers. News of the wealth reached leaders like Cecil Rhodes. He traveled to investigate the gold rumors personally.

Long before the gold rush, the land was inhabited by others. San hunter-gatherers used stone tools in this region. Evidence shows they lived there up to ten centuries ago. Later, Sotho-Tswana communities settled across the broader region. They built stone-walled towns and villages.

These communities stretched from the west to the south. However, wars in the 18th and 19th centuries changed the area. These conflicts are known as the mfecane or difaqane wars. During these times, many Sotho-Tswana towns were destroyed. The Ndebele people eventually established a kingdom northwest of Johannesburg.

Early Johannesburg was often a rough and disorganized place.

It was filled with miners from many different continents. African tribesmen were recruited for unskilled mine work. Many European migrants and traders also moved there. The city faced political tension between the British and the Transvaal government. This tension led to the Jameson Raid in 1896. Later, the Second Boer War brokete out from 1899 to 1902. British forces occupied the city on May 30, 1900. During the war, many African miners left the city. This caused a labor shortage in the mines. To fix this, the mines brought in laborers from China.

In the 20th century, the city underwent massive structural changes. In 1917, the Anglo-American Corporation was founded here. This became one of the world's largest corporations. After the war, many Chinese workers stayed in the area. This helped create a local Chinese community. In the 1930s, major building projects began after South Africa left the gold standard. By the 1950s, the government imposed apartheid.

This was a system of racial separation. It forced different groups of people to live in separate areas. For example, the government built massive townships for black workers. One such area is Soweto, which stands for South-Western Townships.

Soweto is one of the most historically significant areas in South Africa. It was designated a "blacks only" city until 1994. The township became the center of the 1976 Soweto Uprising. During this event, peaceful student protests were met with force. Many famous anti-apartheid leaders lived in Soweto. These included Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. In contrast, other areas were designated for different groups. Lenasia is home to many English-speaking Indo-South Africans. Sandton is known as "Africa's richest square-mile."

Other formerly "white-only" areas included Randburg and Roodeport.

Today, Johannesburg is a massive and diverse urban center. The City of Johannesburg has a population of 5,538,596. The larger Metropolitan Municipality has 6,599,190 people.
