Johan wanted peace between countries. He thought war was bad for business. He also wanted the rich merchant class to have power. He did not want the House of Orange to lead. This group of people was called the Orangists.
In 1672, things changed quickly. This year was called the Rampjaar. England and France attacked the Dutch Republic. Many people became very angry and scared. They blamed Johan and his brother, Cornelis. A mob in The Hague attacked them. This was a very violent and sad end for the brothers.

De Witt worked closely with his uncle, Cornelis de Graeff. De Graeff was a powerful leader in Amsterdam. Together, they formed a political axis that organized the Dutch system. 
De Witt had specific political and economic goals. He wanted a peaceful foreign policy to protect trade. War was very expensive and hurt the economy. He also sought maximum autonomy for the province of Holland. He believed Holland should remain independent from the other six provinces. 
The year 1672 was a turning point for the Dutch Republic. This year is known as the *Rampjaar*, or the Disaster Year. An alliance of England, France, and German states invaded the republic. 
The end of De Witt's life was violent and tragic. A large, angry mob in The Hague attacked the brothers.
