He had to work very hard to care for his sisters. At age 12, he traveled alone to Hong Kong. He worked in a garment factory for about eight dollars a month. While working, he taught himself how to speak English.
As he grew up, Lai became a very successful businessman. In 1975, he bought a small clothing factory called Comitex. He used his earnings to grow his business. In 1981, he started the Giordano clothing brand. This company grew to have 2,400 shops in 30 different countries. It even had more than 8,000 employees. In 1996, Lai sold his part of the clothing business. He wanted to focus on media and politics instead.
Lai used his new focus to change how news was shared. In 1990, he started Next Magazine. In 1995, he spent 100 million dollars to start Apple Daily.
In 2020, Lai faced his biggest challenge yet. He was arrested in August under a new national security law. A court sentenced him to 20 years in prison. Many groups around the world said this was unfair. He was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
Jimmy Lai is a prominent Hong Kong businessman and a key figure in the pro-democracy movement.
Lai's early life was marked by significant hardship and family separation. He was born in Canton in 1947 to a wealthy business family. However, the family lost its fortune during the Communist takeover. When Lai was seven, political turmoil split his family apart. His father moved to Hong Kong, while his mother was sent to labor reform. Lai had to care for his two sisters by selling household items and working as a street trader. At age 12, he stowed away on a trip to Hong Kong alone. He began working as a child laborer in a garment factory, earning about US$8 per month. During this time, he taught himself English to improve his opportunities.
His business career began in earnest within the garment industry. In 1975, Lai used his year-end bonus to purchase a bankrupt factory called Comitex. He focused on producing and exporting sweaters to major U.S. retailers like J.C. Penney. In 1981, he founded the Giordano clothing brand. He used financial incentives to motivate sellers, helping the brand expand across Asia. At its height, Giordano employed more than 8,000 people across 2,400 shops in 30 countries. In 1996, Lai sold his stake in the company to pivot toward media and politics.
Lai transformed the media landscape by introducing a mass-market approach to journalism. In 1990, he launched Next Magazine, which combined political reporting with tabloid-style elements. He later invested US$100 million of his own funds to establish Apple Daily in 1995.
Because of his outspoken views, Lai faced continuous political and physical pressure. He was a critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and advocated for democratic reforms. This stance led to various forms of intimidation. He survived vehicle ramming, assaults, and multiple petrol bomb attacks on his home and media headquarters. Major corporations often avoided advertising in his publications due to political pressure. Despite these challenges, Lai remained committed to defending the right to a free press.
In August 2020, the political situation in Hong Kong changed significantly with a new national security law. Lai was arrested on 10 August 2020 under this law.
Despite his imprisonment, Lai has received numerous international honors for his courage. He was awarded the Freedom of Press Award by Reporters Without Borders. He also received the 2021 Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. In 2022, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for putting his freedom on the line.
