In Theosophical doctrine, the Lord Maitreya is an advanced spiritual entity. This entity would use Krishnamurti’s body to communicate as a World Teacher to guide humanity. The Theosophical Society began preparing him for this massive global role.

To prepare him, the Society established the Order of the Star in the East in 1911. Krishnamurti was named the head of this organization. His upbringing became highly structured and supervised by the Society. He received private tutoring in various academic subjects and religious lessons. He also practiced yoga, meditation, and instruction in British social customs. While he was successful in sports and learned several languages, he often struggled with formal academic schooling. He even attempted university several times but did not complete a degree.

By 1922, Krishnamurti began experiencing painful, seizure-like mystical episodes. These episodes caused a lasting change in how he perceived reality. This internal shift eventually led to a major break from the Theosophical movement. In 1929, he disbanded the Order of the Star in the East. He rejected the idea of being a messiah or a spiritual leader. He famously asserted that "truth is a pathless land." This meant he believed truth could not be reached through any organized doctrine, discipline, or guru. He even advised his listeners not to follow him as an authority.

In his later years, Krishnamurti focused on sharing his insights through "the teachings." He gained significant international recognition during the 1950s. This was aided by the writer Aldous Huxley, who introduced him to mainstream publishers. One of his most famous works, *The First and Last Freedom*, was published in 1954.

He also wrote *Commentaries on Living* and *Krishnamurti's Notebook*. His teaching emphasized a state of "choiceless awareness." He described this as the essence of true meditation, which differs from contrived or practiced techniques.

Krishnamurti's influence continues through various foundations in India, Britain, and the United States. These organizations oversee independent schools based on his specific educational philosophy. His extensive body of talks and writings is still distributed in many different languages.
