Owens showed his talent through many different types of racing and jumping. He competed in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter sprint. He also won the long jump and the 4 × 100-meter relay race. To win a gold medal, an athlete must finish first in their event. In the relay, he ran with teammates Ralph Metcalfe, Frank Wykoff, and Foy Draper. They even set a world record of 39.8 seconds together. Every time he stepped onto the track, he pushed himself to be the fastest. His movements were so quick that he earned many records.
His journey began in Oakville, Alabama, on September 12, 1913. He was the youngest of ten children in his family. When he was nine, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. This move was part of the Great Migration, when many African Americans moved North. At school, a teacher gave him the name "Jesse" because of his Southern accent. He later went to Ohio State University to study and compete. There, he became a star athlete known as the "Buckeye Bullet."
