Jesse James was a famous American outlaw who lived in the mid-1800s.

The American Civil War changed Jesse's life forever. During this war, Missouri was a border state with many different views. Jesse and his brother Frank joined groups called "bushwhackers." These were fighters who supported the South. They followed leaders like William Quantrill and "Bloody Bill" Anderson. The war was very violent for everyone involved.
After the war ended, Jesse became a well-known robber. He and Frank led a group called the James-Younger Gang. They moved across the Midwest to rob banks, trains, and stagecoaches.
Jesse's gang was very active for many years. They were most famous between 1866 and 1876. In 1876, they tried to rob a bank in Northfield, Minnesota. This plan did not work well for them. Many members of the gang were killed or caught by the law. After that, the gang grew smaller. Law enforcement officers worked very hard to find them. Jesse had to keep moving to stay away from the police.

Jesse James was a famous American outlaw and leader of the James–Younger Gang.
Jesse was born on September 5, 1847, in Clay County, Missouri.
The American Civil War brought great turmoil to the James family and their community. Missouri was a border state, meaning it sat between the North and the South. This caused deep divisions among the people living there. Jesse and his brother, Frank James, joined pro-Confederate guerrilla groups called "bushwhackers."
As a teenager, Jesse participated in several violent events under guerrilla leaders. He and Frank followed commanders like William Quantrill and "Bloody Bill" Anderson. In 1864, the brothers were linked to the Centralia Massacre. During this event, guerrillas stopped a train carrying unarmed Union soldiers.
After the Civil War ended, the James brothers turned to organized crime. They led the James–Younger Gang, which operated across the Midwest from about 1866 to 1876.
The gang's power began to fade after a failed robbery in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1876. This attempt resulted in several gang members being killed or captured by law enforcement. Although Jesse continued to commit crimes for a few more years, the pressure from the law increased. He spent much of his later life trying to avoid capture while recruiting new members to his dwindling group.
Jesse James' life ended on April 3, 1882.
