Jehovah's Witnesses are a Christian group with many unique beliefs.
Many things make their way of life different from other Christians. They use a special Bible called the New World Translation. They do not believe in hell or the idea that the soul lives forever. They also do not celebrate holidays like Christmas, Easter, or birthdays. They believe these customs have pagan origins.
The group began in the nineteenth century.

There are many facts about how large this group is. In 2021, they had many active publishers worldwide. These are members who are busy preaching. The group has an active presence in most countries. Some countries have even banned or restricted their activities. In the United States, they are considered a very diverse Christian group. A study in 2016 found they had the lowest average household income of the groups surveyed. Many of their members are converts who joined later in life.
Learning about this group helps us understand different religious views. They have had many legal battles in different countries. These cases have sometimes helped change civil rights laws. Some people call them a church, while others use different names.
Jehovah's Witnesses is a nontrinitarian, millenarian, and restorationist Christian denomination.
Many of the group's core beliefs set them apart from mainstream Christianity. They reject the idea of an inherently immortal soul. They also do not believe in a literal hell. Instead, they believe the destruction of the current world system at Armageddon is imminent. They believe God's kingdom is the only solution for humanity. This belief leads them to avoid holidays like Christmas, Easter, and birthdays. They consider these customs to have pagan origins that are incompatible with Christianity.
Organizational authority is centralized within the denomination. A group known as the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses establishes all doctrines. This body directs the entire organization from its leadership level. Doctrine is not developed through discussion among the rank-and-file members. Instead, it emanates from the Society's leadership. The group also utilizes a system of congregational discipline. This can include formal expulsion and shunning for serious offenses. When members leave formally, they are termed "disassociated." Some members who leave voluntarily may "fade" to avoid being shunned. This process can cause significant mental distress for those involved.
