Jaurès began his professional life as a highly educated philosopher. He was born in Castres in 1859 to a modest family. He was a brilliant student at the Lycée Sainte-Barbe in Paris. In 1878, he entered the École normale supérieure to study philosophy. He earned his agrégation of philosophy in 1881, placing third in the competition. After teaching at the Albi lycée, he lectured at the University of Toulouse. He also wrote two major doctoral theses on German socialism. These works explored the ideas of thinkers like Kant, Fichte, and Hegel.
His career in politics began in 1885 when he was elected as a Republican deputy.
Jaurès was a master of political organization and unification. He edited the newspaper *La Dépêche* and was a defender of Alfred Dreyfus. In 1902, he became the leader of the French Socialist Party. This party was composed of different groups, including the "possibilists" who favored reform. In 1905, he helped merge several groups into the French Section of the Workers' International, known as the SFIO. He worked closely with leaders like Jules Guesde to create this unified movement. His influence helped secure the Radical-Socialist coalition during the Combes administration. This period saw important laws, such as the 1905 law on the Separation of the Churches and the State.
As a historian, Jaurès changed how the French Revolution was studied. He conducted deep research in the archives in Paris. He published a massive work titled *Histoire Socialiste* between 1900 and 1903.

Tragically, Jaurès was assassinated just as World War I began. On July 31, 1914, he went to dine at the Café du Croissant in Paris.

Despite his death, Jaurès left a lasting political legacy. His remains were moved to the Panthéon in 1924 to honor his importance.
