Japan is an island country located in East Asia. It sits in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of the Asian mainland.
The geography of Japan has shaped its history and society. The nation is divided into 47 administrative prefectures. It is also organized into eight traditional regions. As of 2026, the population is almost 123 million people. This makes Japan the 11th most populous country in the world. While the country has one of the highest life expectancies, it faces a population decline. The land's rugged nature means that cities and farms are often crowded together. This concentration of people is a direct result of the mountainous landscape.
Human habitation in the archipelago began during the Upper Paleolithic period. Around 38,000 years ago, the first humans arrived. This marked the start of the Japanese Paleolithic. Later, the Jōmon period emerged around 14,500 BC. This was a semi-sedentary hunter-gatherer culture. They lived in pit dwellings and practiced rudimentary agriculture. They are known for making some of the oldest surviving pottery. Later, the Yayoi people arrived from the Korean Peninsula. They brought wet-rice farming, new pottery styles, and metallurgy from China and Korea.
Ancient Japan saw the rise of centralized government. Between the 4th and 6th centuries, kingdoms were united under an emperor. These rulers sat in Nara and later in Heian-kyō. In 645, the Taika Reforms were implemented to centralize power. These reforms included nationalizing all land. The goal was to enhance the power of the imperial court. This system of centralized government lasted for about 500 years. During the Nara and Heian periods, a unique literary culture began to grow.
From the 12th century, Japan entered a feudal era. Actual power shifted from emperors to military aristocrats known as shoguns. These leaders were supported by feudal lords called daimyo. They were enforced by a warrior nobility called samurai.
The modern era brought rapid changes and conflicts. During the Meiji period, Japan pursued industrialization and modernization. It became an industrial world power. This expansionism led to the annexation of Korea in 1910 and invasions of China. Japan entered World War II as an Axis power. The country suffered through the Pacific War and atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Today, Japan is a major global power and a constitutional monarchy. It has a bicameral legislature called the National Diet.
