Holism is the idea that parts work together to make a whole. He wrote a book about this in 1926. The book was called "Holism and Evolution." Other smart people, like Alfred Adler, studied his work. Smuts believed this idea applied to many things. It could apply to science, people, and even society. He thought the whole was more than just the sum of its parts. Jan Christian Smuts was a multifaceted South African leader who shaped the 20th century.

He served as a statesman, a military officer, and a philosopher. Most notably, he held the office of Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa during two distinct periods. He served from 1919 to 1924 and again from 1939 to 1948. Beyond his national leadership, Smuts was an internationalist who helped build global organizations. He played a vital role in establishing the League of Nations and the United Nations. He was also a key figure in the development of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Smuts's journey began with a significant change in his family life. He was born on May 24, 1870, at the Bovenplaats farm near Malmesbury. His parents, Jacobus and Catharina Smuts, were respected Afrikaner farmers. Originally, rural custom meant Jan would stay on the farm to work. This was because families often only educated the first son. However, his elder brother died in 1882. This allowed Jan to attend school in Riebeek West. He worked hard to catch up with older students. By 1886, he entered Victoria College in Stellenbosch. He graduated in 1891 with top honors in Literature and Science.

His academic success led him to the United Kingdom.

He won a scholarship to study law at Christ's College, Cambridge. Life in England was difficult for him at first. He felt homesick and isolated from other students. He also struggled with money because his scholarship was small. A friend, Professor J. I. Marais, helped him by sending a large loan. This financial support allowed Smuts to focus on his studies. He graduated in 1894 with double first-class honors. One of his tutors called him the most brilliant student they had ever met.

Smuts returned to South Africa and entered a period of intense conflict.

In 1899, the Second Boer War began between Boer republics and the British. Smuts served as an officer in a commando unit. He became an expert in hit-and-run warfare. His unit successfully harassed a British army that was forty times its size. After the war ended in 1902, Smuts helped negotiate the Treaty of Vereeniging. This treaty resulted in the annexation of the South African Republic and the Orange Free State into the British Empire. He later helped shape the constitution for the new Union of South Africa in 1910.

During his political career, Smuts introduced a profound philosophical concept called holism.

He first used this term in print in the early twentieth century. In his 1926 book, *Holism and Evolution*, he explained the idea in detail. Holism is the theory that parts work together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of those parts. He believed this concept applied to science, ethics, and sociology. Famous thinkers like Alfred Adler were very interested in his work. Adler even recommended Smuts's book to his students. Smuts believed that the human personality was the highest form of holism.

Smuts's leadership extended to the world stage during major global conflicts.

During the First World War, he served as the Union's defence minister. He led troops in the East African campaign in 1916. In 1919, he attended the Paris Peace Conference. There, he advocated for the creation of the League of Nations. He also secured South African control over former German South-West Africa. During the Second World War, he led South Africa as a pro-interventionist leader. In 1945, he signed the United Nations Charter. He was the only person to have signed the Treaty of Versailles and the UN Charter.

Despite his international successes, Smuts's domestic legacy is complex.

He was an internationalist, but he also supported racial segregation. He opposed democratic rule that was non-racial. This stance meant he supported systems that kept people apart based on race. His second term as Prime Minister ended in 1948. That year, the National Party won the election. The new government began implementing early apartheid policies. Toward the end of his life, Smuts supported the Fagan Commission. This commission suggested relaxing some restrictions on Black South Africans living in cities. He died on September 11, 1950.
