This idea changed how many people view the relationship between biology and the environment.

Lovelock developed the Gaia hypothesis while working as a consultant for NASA. In 1961, he designed sensitive instruments to analyze the atmospheres of other planets. While studying the Martian atmosphere, he noticed a significant difference between Mars and Earth. The Martian atmosphere was in a state of chemical equilibrium. This means it was very stable and contained mostly carbon dioxide. It had very little oxygen, methane, or hydrogen. Lovelock reasoned that if life existed on Mars, it would alter the atmosphere. The lack of chemical activity suggested that Mars was likely dead. This work helped inform later missions, such as the Viking program in the late 1970s.

The model imagined a planet orbiting a star with changing energy levels. On this planet, two types of daisies lived: black daisies and white daisies. If the planet becomes too cold, black daisies spread and warm the surface. If the planet becomes too hot, white daisies spread and cool the surface. This feedback loop maintains a steady temperature for life.

Lovelock was also a highly skilled inventor of scientific tools. He created the electron capture detector, which is used to find tiny amounts of gas. In the late 1960s, he used this device to detect chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, in the atmosphere. In 1972, he conducted a research expedition to measure these gases across the globe. He collected 50 air samples ranging from the northern hemisphere to the Antarctic. He found CFCs in every single sample. While he initially thought the levels posed no toxic hazard, his data was vital. Later, scientists discovered that CFCs cause the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. His measurements provided the essential data needed to understand this global issue.

In the mid-1950s, he studied cryopreservation, which is the process of freezing living things. He successfully demonstrated that hamsters could be frozen and revived. He found that 60% of the water in a hamster's brain could crystallize into ice without causing harm. He also worked on medical research to help protect soldiers from burns. During World War II, he registered as a conscientious objector due to his beliefs. However, he later tried to enlist after seeing the atrocities committed by the Nazis. His medical research was considered so valuable that he was not sent to active combat.
