He also explored the relationship between chemical equilibrium and reaction rates. This research helped scientists understand how quickly chemical processes occur. Additionally, Conant studied the biochemistry of the hemoglobin-oxyhemoglobin system. By examining how iron changes state in the blood, he provided essential insights into methemoglobinemia, a condition that prevents tissue from receiving enough oxygen.

Conant’s scientific contributions included several major breakthroughs in acid-base chemistry. He studied acids that were significantly stronger than standard mineral acid solutions. He called these substances "superacids." This work helped build the foundation for the Hammett acidity function. He also contributed to the understanding of the Finkelstein reaction, which involves the reaction of organic halides with inorganic iodide salts.

His research even extended to industrial applications, such as the polymerization of isoprene to create synthetic rubber.

His path to leadership began with his education and early professional life. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1893, he graduated from Harvard College in 1913. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard in 1916 through an unusual double dissertation. He studied both liquid sodium amalgams and cyclopropane derivatives. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War I, where he worked on chemical developments, he returned to Harvard. He rose through the academic ranks, becoming the Sheldon Emery Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1929 and the chairman of the chemistry department in 1931.

In 1933, Conant became the President of Harvard University, where he introduced a major reformist agenda. He sought to make the university more egalitarian and diverse. To achieve this, he promoted the use of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for admissions. He also oversaw the introduction of co-educational classes, allowing women to enter Harvard Medical School and Harvard Law School for the first time.

Conant also changed university traditions by removing class rankings and the requirement for Latin classes. He implemented an "up or out" policy for faculty to ensure academic excellence.

During World War II, Conant’s influence moved into the realm of national security and high-stakes science. In 1941, he became the chairman of the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC). In this role, he oversaw vital projects, including the development of synthetic rubber and the Manhattan Project.

The Manhattan Project was the massive scientific effort to develop the first atomic bombs. On July 16, 1945, Conant was present at the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range for the Trinity test, the first successful detonation of an atomic bomb.

After the war, Conant transitioned into international diplomacy and public service. In 1953, he retired from Harvard to serve as the United States High Commissioner for Germany. His task was to oversee the restoration of German sovereignty following the conflict. He later served as the U.S. Ambassador to West Germany until 1957. Throughout his later years, he remained a dedicated communicator of science. He wrote several books to explain the scientific method to the general public and criticized the state of the American education system in various published works.
